To attempt to love another person while engaging in this practiced narcissism, without being transformed by mercy, will surely bring grave harm.\u201d<br \/>\nThe bishops passed the document Nov. 17 in a 230 to 4 vote, with one abstention. It needed 181 votes to pass.<br \/>\nBefore the vote, the bishops approved on a voice vote an amendment proposed by Bishop John F. Doerfler of Marquette, Michigan: \u201cIt is a grave matter by its object. It is a mortal sin if it is committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent. Unintentional ignorance and factors that compromise the voluntary and free character of the act can diminish a person\u2019s moral capability.\u201d<br \/>\nThe amendment struck down the original sentence: \u201cIt is a grave sin by its very object although the particular intention and circumstances help determine one\u2019s culpability.\u201d<br \/>\nIn presenting the document to the bishops Nov. 16, the first day of their annual fall general meeting in Baltimore, Bishop Richard J. Malone of Buffalo, New York, chairman of the committee that prepared it, described pornography as a \u201cdark shadow in our world today.\u201d<br \/>\nHe said that it is a \u201cparticularly sinister instance of consumption\u201d whereby men, women and children \u201care consumed for the pleasure of others.\u201d<br \/>\nBishop Malone noted that the statement, which has been in the works for three years, is \u201cpurposely comprehensive\u201d but can by no means address the entire issue. (CNS photo\/Bob Roller)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Using the penitential Psalm 51 for both the title and as a recurring motif throughout the proposed statement, it says in its introduction, \u201cWe have seen the corrosive damaged caused by pornography: children whose innocence is stolen; men and women who feel great guilt and shame for viewing pornography occasionally or habitually; spouses who feel betrayed and traumatized; and men, women and children exploited by the pornography industry.\u201d<br \/>\nAlthough U.S. courts have had difficulty in defining pornography, the proposed statement borrows form the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ccc_css\/archive\/catechism\/p3s2c2a6.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/a> to define it: \u201cremoving real or simulated sexual acts form the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties.\u2019<br \/>\n\u201cIt encompasses what is sometimes distinguished as \u2018soft\u2019- and \u2018hard-core\u2019 pornography,\u201d the proposed statement adds. \u201cThis is an artificial divide; all pornography is harmful and wrong, while the effects on a person may vary on the intensity of the content. Pornography is not art.\u201d<br \/>\nIt says, \u201cPornography can never be justified, even within marriage.\u201d<br \/>\nThe proposed statement also links pornography to other sins, \u201cespecially masturbation. Masturbation, which is deliberate, erotic stimulation often to the point of orgasm, commonly occurs together with pornography use. While our culture largely sees it as acceptable, masturbation is always gravely contrary to chastity and the dignity of one\u2019s body.\u201d<br \/>\nIt noted pornography\u2019s pervasiveness: \u201cErotic, oversexualized, and pornographic images are more present in American society than ever before. \u2026 Mainstream entertainment itself has become hypersexualized. Novels that at one time would have been classified as \u2018erotica\u2019 are mainstream, to say nothing of the overtly sexual romance novel genre.\u201d<br \/>\nThe proposed statement calls pornography \u201can industry of sin.\u201d \u201cPornography is a big business. Estimates of revenue stretch easily into the billions of dollars every year. The pornography industry is aggressive, savvy and regulated only sporadically,\u201d it said. \u201cOther businesses, such as hotel chains, cable companies and drugstores, profit greatly from the widespread use of pornography and contribute to its accessibility.\u201d<br \/>\nThat pervasiveness leads to negative effects on people and society, according to the proposed statement.<br \/>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vpGygVwFMtM?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&autohide=2&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent\" width=\"100%\" height=\"424\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/span><br \/>\n\u201cMen are particularly susceptible to pornography because the male brain is strongly drawn to sexual images, a kind of \u2018visual magnetism\u2019 aggressively exploited by the pornography industry,\u201d it says, adding it can lead to addiction. Women \u201cuse pornography for similar reasons as men,\u201d it says, and are told wrongly that \u201cusing pornography is liberating for them.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cViewing pornography, usually combined with masturbation, directly affects the brain\u2019s reward pathways and has been noted to have a similar effect on the brain as cocaine does on a person with a drug addiction or as alcohol on a person with an alcohol addiction,\u201d it says. \u201cThe moral culpability of an addicted person may be lessened depending on the circumstances, but the situation is particularly grave.\u201d<br \/>\nPornography filters down to younger people, accounting for the rise of \u201csexting,\u201d sexually explicit text messages \u201cassociated with other risky sexual behaviors,\u201d the proposed statement says, including \u201cgreater risk of getting pregnant as a teenager \u2014 or impregnating someone \u2014 or contracting an STI,\u201d a sexually transmitted infection.<br \/>\nIn one section of the 35-page text, those who use pornography are urged to turn away from it and to recommit their lives to Christ.<br \/>\nTo those who produce pornography, the proposed statement says, \u201cThe Lord, in his great mercy and justice, is calling you to turn away from your sins and follow him,\u201d adding, \u201cIf you are also \u2014 or have been \u2014 engaged in criminal exploitation, we urge you to report your action and to hand yourself over to civil authorities. God can use your previous mistakes to help others.\u201d<br \/>\nIt tells men and women who use pornography to \u201cask for forgiveness. Many good people struggle with this sin. You are not alone; there is always hope! \u2026 Freedom from pornography is a daily choice and calls for ongoing formation.\u201d<br \/>\nThe proposed statement advises those harmed by their spouse\u2019s pornography use to \u201cseek solace in prayer, in receiving the sacraments, and in Eucharistic Adoration.\u201d While \u201canger at your spouse is natural and often justified,\u201d it makes a suggestion to \u201cset clear boundaries if possible, such as installing an online monitoring program, clearing the home of any pornography, taking care of your own health, and refusing to be used as an excuse for your spouse\u2019s pornography use.\u201d<br \/>\nIt says a web page of the website of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.usccb.org<\/a>, will include updated resources. including a list of support groups for those battling an addiction to pornography, educational resources about its harmful effects and guidance for families and whose who work with children to protect youngsters from pornography.<br \/>\nThe bishops approved the drafting of the statement in 2013.<br \/>\n<em>\u2014 By Mark Pattison, Catholic News Service.
